Meet the scientists behind the WaveCel Helmet technology at Trek Bontrager:
Steven Madey, MD, born and raised in New York City went to medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has worked with Dr. Bottlang for 25 years creating life-saving and limb-sparing products in the orthopedic space. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific paper and he is the president of Trauma Specialists at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Tony White received his dual Undergraduate Degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Physics at Syracuse University. He received his Master’s Degree in Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering at the University of California – Davis. He worked for Aerojet-Rocketdyne as a structural analyst focusing on critical design work in shock and vibration of rocket engines. During his time at Trek, he’s focused on learning the state of the art in academic research on head injury, developing new test methods and using that to create better helmets.
Michael Bottlang, Ph.D., was born and raised in southern Germany at the picturesque Lake of Konstanz. Michael obtained his BS degree in biomechanical engineering and started his research career at Germany’s most prestigious orthopedic research laboratory in Ulm. After obtaining a Ph.D. in biomechanical engineering at the University of Iowa in 1999, he founded the Legacy Biomechanics Laboratory in Portland, Oregon, together with his surgeon colleagues Drs. Madey and Fitzpatrick. Their research goal is the development of evidence-based strategies for treatment and prevention of traumatic injuries.
Since 2002, he has continuously received research funding from the US National Institute of Health and from the Department of Defense. He has published his research in over 70 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters, and he has received 25 patents on inventions from his research.
Today, inventions of Dr. Bottlang and his team impact patient care around the world. Each year, their implants for chest wall repair are used in over 3,000 patients in over 40 countries. Their device for stabilization of pelvic fractures has become the standard of care for first responders in the US and Europe and has been adopted by the US Army. In common, all their inventions were borne by research, leading to highly effective, yet surprisingly simple and robust solutions.
Their most persistent research effort has been dedicated to preventing brain injury by developing the best possible helmet technology. As early as in 2002, they developed a state-of-the-art helmet impact simulator as a research platform to develop the best helmet possible. In 2011, their WAVECEL helmet invention became the first advanced helmet technology to be funded by the National Institute of Health. Since then, Dr. Bottlang’s team has focused on optimizing and integrating WAVECEL technology into bicycle helmets that are light-weight, durable, cool, and as safe as possible.
