Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.
Triglycerides are a type of fat that travel in the bloodstream and are associated with increased risk of heart disease. High triglyceride levels are linked to low HDL (good) cholesterol, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, and excess abdominal fat. Factors that can raise triglycerides include diet high in carbohydrates and alcohol consumption. Exercise is an effective way to lower triglyceride levels by using them as an energy source. Triglycerides themselves do not directly contribute to plaque buildup, but are a marker of overall metabolic health and cardiovascular disease risk.
Takeaways:
- Triglycerides are a type of fat that travels in the bloodstream and are linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
- High triglyceride levels are associated with low HDL ("good") cholesterol and small, dense LDL ("bad") cholesterol particles, which can contribute to plaque buildup in arteries.
- Factors that can increase triglyceride levels include a diet high in carbohydrates, excessive alcohol consumption, and insulin resistance/obesity.
- Exercise is an effective way to lower triglyceride levels by using them as an energy source.
- Triglycerides themselves are not a direct cause of atherosclerosis, but are more of a marker of overall metabolic health.
- The combination of high triglycerides, low HDL, small LDL particles, central obesity, high blood pressure, and inflammation is linked to increased cardiovascular disease risk.
- Insulin resistance, which is common in those who are overweight or obese, is closely tied to elevated triglyceride levels.
- Guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity to help manage triglyceride levels.
- Lowering triglycerides is important, as heart disease is a major cause of death, with someone suffering a heart attack every 20 minutes in Australia.
- The podcast host, Dr. Warrick Bishop, is a cardiologist dedicated to helping people improve their heart health through education and lifestyle changes.
Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.
Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.
Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.
The devastating fact in all of this is…
Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.
This podcast is for anyone who wants to improve their health literacy and gain information to help them make the best decisions about their risk of heart attack, their cholesterol, blood pressure, risk of diabetes, weight loss and general health. Join me on my personal mission journey to prevent Heart Attack on a global scale.
