21. Overcoming unconscious bias and finding happiness in Teal leadership [S2 E3]
Manage episode 372172206 series 3461399
Hazel Beasley is a Board Member, Engineer and Consultant who works in an organisation that doesn't believe in traditional hierarchy and titles.
While having young children Hazel worked as a teacher but when she was ready to transition back into engineering she found it more tricky than she had imagined. Lots of people had unhelpful opinions and she also found herself experiencing unconscious bias in several ways.
After a number of jobs, Hazel is now thrilled to be working at the consulting firm Hatmil, a company that embraces Teal leadership and encourages employees to bring their whole selves to work. The Teal approach means there is traditional hierarchy and Hazel shares more about how this really works.
Hazel is also the first elected female employee director on the Hatmill Operations Board.
In this conversation Hazel shares:
- Her valuable insights on dealing with sexism and unconscious bias in a male-dominated industry
- Relying on the power of silence and speaking up selectively in meetings
- The importance of appreciating and giving specific feedback to others
- The unique board structure at Hatmill, and how being an elected board member has given her a broad view of the company and allowed her to be more involved in business-wide conversations.
Hazel also discusses Teal Leadership, an evolutionary concept that she believes is the future of organisational structures.
Hazel's story serves as an inspiration for those looking to make a career change and perhaps taking an unconventional path, and shows how powerful connecting with others and building genuine relationships can be. If you're feeling stuck in your career, Hazel’s story is a timely reminder that it's never too late to tread your own path, make a change and pursue your passions.
