In this episode, Christine Joyluck Sarno shares how being the daughter of an immigrant mother influenced her career path from a corporate career to starting her own business as a Financial Coach, aka "WingWoman" to other women.
"...My mother is an immigrant, born in Taiwan. She married my father very young, who was American. But, you know, at the time when my parents met, my mom was very, very young in her early twenties and, you know, they did fall in love. I mean, it was a magical story. At that time my mom was a big fan of American Motown music and import music and the place to go with her girlfriends to listen to music and dance for at the officer's clubs. My dad had a military background. He was in the Air Force. And so, you know, this is kind of where the expats and American businessmen and the military men would go and, and he saw my mom on the dance floor with her girlfriends dancing and, and he said, I'm in love.
That's how they met. And I wish that the end of that, you know, that that story had a fairytale ending. But the challenge for my mom was that she found herself in an abusive marriage with an alcoholic and that was a tough one. And I think, you know, my younger sister and I growing up, we watched how with English as a second language for my mom, cuz my parents ended up moving to the US when I was three. And my sister was one and a half. My mom actually came here under duress.
...it was a struggle, you know, it was not a really great environment. And struggling to learn English. No family, no support here...difficulties being able to communicate and on top of that, no money of her own. No money. No money of her own..."
