This week, Tee is excited to welcome Liz Harriman for a discussion of the dangers of flame retardants to you and your family's health. Since the 1970s, flame-retardant chemicals have been added to many types of products, from furnishings to mattresses, carpets, electronics, and household appliances. We are exposed to toxic flame retardants through inhalation of dust particles containing these chemicals, whether it’s in consumer products, textiles, or furniture that contain flame retardants. The good news is that alternatives to these chemicals have begun to be developed and many companies are beginning to remove these chemicals from their products!

Liz, alongside her colleagues at TURI, is at the forefront of this fight for change. As Deputy Director of the Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell, Liz is responsible for managing the operations and technical functions of the Institute, as well as working with other TURA agencies to set direction for the program. In her more than 20 years of working at the Institute, she has provided technical research and support services to Massachusetts companies with the goal of identifying safer alternatives to toxic chemicals used in manufacturing and products.

Her recent technical work includes prioritization and hazard evaluation of chemicals, chemical alternatives assessment, and flame retardants. Ms. Harriman is a registered Professional Engineer and holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Cornell University in Civil Engineering, as well as a Master's degree in Hazardous Materials Management from Tufts University. In this conversation, Tee and Liz discuss her work while addressing the many ways that the advocacy for change in this area has been making a difference in the lives of children and families worldwide.
