Charity RAINN tends to use the term “victim” when referring to someone who has recently been affected by sexual violence; when discussing a particular crime; or when referring to aspects of the criminal justice system.

They often use “survivor” to refer to someone who has gone through the recovery process, or when discussing the short- or long-term effects of sexual violence.

Some people identify as a victim, while others prefer the term survivor. The best way to be respectful is to ask for their preference.

In this week's episode we are joined by Lauren-Eden Penn, a survivor of childhood sexual trauma at the hands of her HIV positive father. Lauren is a mother and business owner who has recently waived her right to anonymity to speak out about her story in the hopes to inspire and support other survivors. She also recently went viral on TikTok after sharing her story in light of the recent overturning of Roe Vs Wade in the US and changes to abortion laws. "For those that may not have seen the recent trend on TikTok, thousands of people are sharing their personal traumatic sexual experiences, followed by the words ‘Keep your laws off our bodies’, to illustrate how, in many cases abortions may well be necessary. My TikTok featured the words ‘Have you ever lost your virginity at the age of 14 to your HIV+ Father? What’d you say? Oh you haven’t? 'Keep your laws off our bodies’ I decided to participate in the trend after another girl's video came up on my For You page." While the issue began in America, Lauren strongly feels that the problem is not limited to those across the pond. "Although I don’t reside in the US, I felt it was important to speak up on the issue and use my voice to show support and stand in solidarity with every woman in the US who could be affected by the harmful effects of overturning Roe v Wade," she said. - Words via Dorset Live article here. In this week's episode of The Shushbox podcast we are joined by former school teacher, principal, and survivor of early childhood trauma, Lynn Barrett. In 1992 Lynn was diagnosed with MPD (multiple personality disorder) which later was diagnosed as DID (disassociation identity disorder.) In this episode, Lynn talks about her life with early childhood trauma and how she survived and pushed through despite being exposed to abuse at such a young age. Lynn talks about her experiences growing up with DID and how common it is in young children who have been abused in the past. She now helps those who are diagnosed with DID or MPD navigate life through the eyes of someone who has brought light from her own diagnosis. She runs weekly dissociative disorder writing writing workshops which can be found here and has also released her memoir entitled - 'Crazy - Reclaiming Life from the Shadow of Traumatic Memory' which can be found here. Lynn speaks extensively on perseverance and how people with DID can navigate relationships, work, friendships, etc through footwork and an open heart. She instills the importance of having a good therapist and support network whilst going on the healing journey. “Just the very fact that you survived this chronic abuse, means you have the strength, and wisdom, and resilience inside you that you don’t know you have yet. Annie helps to educate the justice system on LGBTQ+ cases as well as on why many people within this community may not report, due to status of being out etc. In this episode we discuss the need for additional support for the queer community and raise awareness to the discriminations that are common within LGBTQ+ cases of sexual abuse. Reiki (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing, We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well being. The method of receiving Reiki is simple. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation. The whole person is treated rather than specific areas. Sessions can take 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half, depending on the client’s needs. Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis and will not predict any specific outcome from treatment. If people are concerned about their symptoms they should see a doctor. A number of passengers reportedly looked on without doing anything to help, with some even recording the incident on their phones. In this weeks episode of The Shushbox podcast we are joined by Gabriela Mejia, who is the Communications and Programs Manager at Hollaback to talk more about how to be an active bystander in scenarios like this. Hollaback’s mission is to end harassment in all its forms by transforming the culture that perpetuates hate and harassment. They often use “survivor” to refer to someone who has gone through the recovery process, or when discussing the short- or long-term effects of sexual violence. Special Episode: The Texas Abortion Ban 39:11

In light of recent happenings, The Shushbox team have an unfiltered conversation about the new Texas Abortion Ban. "Progressive and Heartbroken. Those are the two words that are really coming up. Heartbroken from the fact that this is something that even needs to be discussed at this level, the amount of people that it is going to affect in the future, the amount of people that it is affecting right now who have had abortions and just having this flare up in the law, triggering them as well. And then then progression of OK what are we going to do about it." The US supreme court refused to block a Texas Abortion law, which basically prevents women from having an abortion after the 6 week mark. With absolutely no exceptions, even in cases of rape and incest. The court voted 5 to 4 against blocking the countries most radical law which will impact over 7 million women of child bearing years, living in one of the biggest state in the country. The decision goes against the famous 1973 Roe Vs Wade which was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. This usually could be any time up until a foetus can survive outside of the womb. Which is normally between 22-24 weeks of pregnancy. Here’s a list of organizations advocating and fighting for women’s rights in Texas for those who want to support: TEA Fund : The Texas Equal Access Fund offers funding for low-income people seeking abortions who cannot afford it, and also advocates for increased access to abortions as a fundamental healthcare right. Avow : Avow organizes Texas voters to campaign for an end to anti-abortion policies in the state, and runs a political action committee that works to elect leaders who support access. ACLU Texas : The ACLU of Texas has worked to defend civil liberties in the state since 1938. Fund Texas Choice : Fund Texas Choice funds travel to abortions for Texas residents, whether their appointments are in or out of state, including bus or plane tickets and hotels. Whole Woman’s Health Alliance : Whole Woman’s Health Alliance aims to end the stigma around abortion in society, and runs a network of clinics offering abortion resources. The Lilith Fund : The Lilith Fund is the oldest abortion fund in Texas, offering direct financial assistance for those seeking abortions. National Abortion Federation : A national pro-choice group that supports abortion providers across the country. Center for Reproductive Rights : A global legal advocacy group that has strengthened reproductive health laws in the United States, as well as Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Hosted on Acast. This week we are joined by Kenyora Parham, Executive Director of End Rape on Campus (EROC) to talk more about The Red Zone of Sexual Assault on college campuses. "As we are coming off the heels of Covid-19, some schools are coming back from virtual learning to in-person learning...so what we fear is that the freshman class and untraditional sophomore classes are essentially coming together who have not undergone that in person college experience, which is going to attribute to the uptick of unwanted sexual assault. So we have actually named that The Double Red Zone for this year". EROC (End Rape on Campus) works to end campus sexual violence through direct support for survivors and their communities; prevention through education; and policy reform at the campus, local, state, and federal levels.
